In 1980, Pam Rogers, Akosua Dyan McCray, Tia Adé, and Paula Pree attended a song workshop presented by world-renowned a cappella group, Sweet Honey in The Rock. Then, in 1981, signifying a quest for continual growth and development, they presented their first public performance as In Process…

Using rhythms and harmonies born of slavery and adapted and nurtured throughout the sojourn of African people in America, the women of In Process… lift their voices in the oral tradition to raise contemporary issues and the consciousness of all people. Her blended repertoire includes spirituals, gospel, jazz, blues, and historic and contemporary songs of love, freedom, peace and justice.

In Process… in 2025 celebrates 45 years of singing and supporting community change.

Regrets – another artist gone

TOM PRASADA-RAO, a musician’s musician, passed away on June 19, 2024.

It is with sad news from the NYT that we let you know that Tom passed away on June 19, 2024. We’ve now lost 2 performers that graced our stage, made an impact on the very wide range of performers and music lovers, Tom and Phil Wiggins. They will both be sorely missed, and the Carroll Cafe team is very grateful that we were blessed by both musicians gracing our stage. The chance to perform locally, in an intimate venue, allowed them do what they loved close to home, with many friends in the audience.

2023-2024 season

Jennifer Cutting and the OCEAN Celtic Quartet

OCEAN Celtic Quartet puts a refreshing spin on traditional British and Irish songs as well as Cutting’s original compositions, from soaring ballads and stirring sea chanteys to blazing fiddle and accordion tunes.

Carroll Cafe is delighted to announce that we will be bringing Jennifer Cutting and her friends (Seán Heely, Lisa Moscatiello, Steve Winick) in the form of the Ocean Celtic Quartet for our April 12. 2024 concert.

The group has won over 25 Washington Area Music Awards, a #1 spot on the national Folk DJ Charts, and a triumphant appearance on NPR’s “Mountain Stage.” They have a history of sold-out concerts at such venues as The Birchmere and The Kennedy Center.

Fairport Convention’s Simon Nicol says they “get right inside the spirit of the folk music of the British Isles,” Steeleye Span’s Maddy Prior calls their songwriting “stunning,” and the Washington Post calls them “Nothing short of spellbinding.”

The OCEAN Celtic Quartet is led by composer and ethnomusicologist JENNIFER CUTTING (accordion and keyboards), a Washington Area Music Association “Musician of the Year” and “Songwriter of the Year.” OCEAN features the stunning vocalist LISA MOSCATIELLO, folklorist/vocalist/percussionist STEPHEN WINICK, and U.S. National Scottish Fiddle champion SEÁN HEELY. OCEAN is known for getting audiences up on their feet to dance to their electrifying jigs and reels; and, in the next moment, raising goosebumps with their soaring vocals and otherworldly Celtic beauty. Add a penchant for deep research and scholarship, and a quirky sense of humor, and you have a band that will captivate all ages.

With this concert, OCEAN welcomes vocalist Lisa Moscatiello back to the group after several years away, during which time she earned her doctorate in clinical psychology and established her career as a student counselor at Howard University. To celebrate Lisa’s rejoining the fold, OCEAN will delve into the back catalog of Jennifer and Lisa’s long artistic partnership to do some rarely heard material dating back to The New St. George and the early years of the Ocean Orchestra. To round out the concert, they will perform a few ballads from vocalist Steve Winick’s upcoming album of Robin Hood ballads, and a few songs celebrating the arrival of Spring.

Carroll Cafe is delighted to announce that we will be bringing Ruthie and the Wranglers back for our January 12, 2024 concert. Takoma Park’s own Ruthie and the Wranglers — from original Americana Country to a rousing Surf instrumental or whisky drenched ballad, their clever lyrics, high energy and heavenly harmonies, set them apart from the rest. Their Americana/Country roots and their unstoppable energy is like Loretta Lynn meets the Ramones at Dick Dale party!” The Washington Area Music Association (The WAMMIES) has declared them emeritus after more than 30 WAMMIE wins!

This is sure to be a sold-out show and we have opened the registration for seats (see below).
